It's A First--And Last--Time For 'Beer Me' Marathoner

CHICAGO (WBBM) - There were repeat winners in both the men's and women's divisions in this year's Chicago Marathon - with times a little slower this year, due to warmer weather.

WBBM's Steve Miller has the story of one participant who was not worrying about finishing at the head of the pack.

Making his debut in a marathon was 29-year-old runner Mike Colonna of Chicago.

"First and only marathon, yes. The last one, too."

WBBM: Why? Why last?

"This is a little scientific experiment. I haven't trained at all. So I'm going to see if I can do it. And then after that, I'm done putting forth physical effort and exertion."

Colonna says he rides his bike to work. That's about all the exercise he gets.

WBBM: And your shirt says...

"Beer me."

"I don't think the human body is a house made of glass. I think that if you push it, you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. So I'm going to finish."

And Mike did finish. His time: just over 5 hours and 52 minutes.
