Inspector General Finds Problems With Red-Light Camera System

(CBS) – Drivers hate those red-light cameras.

And now a scathing report suggests drivers may have a legitimate beef, in some cases.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.

Non-functioning equipment at red-light camera intersections have led to more than 45,000 violations going undetected.

That was just one of the findings in a review of the program by the inspector general, who faults the previous vendor.

"There was not active, vigorous program and contract management," City of Chicago Inspector General Joe Ferguson said Friday.

Chicago Department of Transportation Cmsr. Rebekah Scheinfeld says changes have been made to correct the mismanagement of the previous administration.

"With our new partner and vendor, Xerox, we've adopted stronger management practices and stronger controls in that contract," she says.

Drivers CBS 2 spoke to would like to see more than three seconds for a yellow light.
