Inmate Arrested After Being Mistakenly Released From Cook County Jail
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 25-year-old inmate has been arrested peacefully after a day of unearned freedom.
There was no paperwork for further detention, so Jeremiah Harris was released from Cook County jail Monday after his acquittal for murder.
But Sheriff's spokesman Cara Smith said the release was a mistake.
"What is hanging over his head is he is serving a 12 year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections as an armed, habitual offender which allows for extended sentencing," said Smith.
Smith said police tracked Harris to a residence in suburban Carpentersville where he was arrested without incident and returned to Statesville.
A source told CBS 2's Brad Edwards that once notified detectives cast a wide net contacting family, acquaintances to re-capture Harris.
Smith says the mistaken release, the third this year, points out how badly a computerized tracking system is needed for the Cook County Jail.
