Indiana State Trooper Hurt In Hit-And-Run
LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (STMW) - Indiana State Police are looking for the driver of a stolen car that struck a State Police trooper in one of two Monday night hit-and-run crashes in northwest Indiana.
A motorist notified police at 6:27 p.m. of a hit-and-run crash in the westbound lanes of the Indiana East-West Toll Road (I-80/90) near the LaPorte State Road 39 exit, according to an Indiana State Police release.
Trooper Ron Davidson saw the 2003 Toyota Camry traveling west on the Toll Road attempted to stop the car, the release said. The silver four-door car started to pull over then took off.
The car later struck Indiana State Police Tooper George Hornsby, 30, on the westbound Toll Road near the Portage, Ind., exit, the release said. The car did not stop and exited at Willowcreek Road in Portage and fled north.
The trooper was waiting behind his police car to deploy his stop sticks when the car approached, the release said. Hornsby, a two-year State Police veteran, attempted to throw the stop sticks when the car swerved to the right and hit him.
The trooper was taken to North Lake Hospital in Gary, Ind., where he will undergo surgery on his leg, the release said.
The car, with Indiana "In God We Trust" license plate numbers JF 1575, was reported stolen to the Gary Police Department Jan. 7 the release said.
The car has front end damage and was driven by a white man with a female passenger, State Police said.
Anyone with information on the Toyota or the driver is asked to call Indiana State Police Detective Mike Robinson at (574) 234-4157.
