Indiana Excise Cop Helps Deliver Baby On Roadside
SUGAR RIDGE TOWNSHIP, Ind. (CBS) -- An Indiana officer who normally deals with cigarettes and alcohol has branched out into obstetrics for the morning, by the side of the road.
As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, as Indiana Excise police Lt. Christopher Bard headed home at 4 a.m. Thursday, he spotted a car in the gas station at Indiana 46 and 59 with the door open, and the driver leaning over the passenger's lap.

The passenger was a 22-year-old woman, and the driver was the girl's mother, an EMT, who was helping the 22-year-old deliver a baby.
Bard pitched in himself.
"He cut one of her shoelaces with his knife, and he held the baby girl in a blanket, while the woman's mother cut the umbilical cord, and tied off the baby's end of the umbilical cord with a shoelace," said excise police Cpl. Travis Thickstun.
Thickstun says Bard then escorted grandmother, mother and newborn daughter, all in good condition, to Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
