Ind. Family Trapped In Snowbound Car Overnight
CHESTERTON, Ind. (CBS) -- White-out conditions, on top of snowy, ice-covered roads made travel in northwest Indiana very difficult.
Some drivers were even trapped in their cars overnight, CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.
If you think you can't get stranded, just listen to what happened to a Hammond, Ind. family that had to brave the storm to pick up two small children on Sunday.
Tammy Logan sat trapped behind the wheel of her car for more than 12 hours.
Logan, her sister and her sister's two young kids were stopped in their tracks by a snowstorm.
They were driving west on U.S. 30 from Wanatah. At about 5:30 p.m., they say blowing and drifting snow pulled traffic to a stop. With gas in the tank, she kept the car running all night to keep warm.
"We'd roll down the windows a couple times to get fresh air," Logan said.
Drivers still battled low visibility on U.S. 30. And farther east, on State Road 2, Indiana transportation officials called it impassable.
East of Gary, even the roads that are open were still packed with snow and layered with ice. Drivers were urged to be cautious.
