Incumbent State Rep Misses Deadline For Primary Ballot

DES PLAINES, Ill. (CBS) -- A longtime suburban lawmaker is being forced to run for re-election as a write-in candidate.

As WBBM Newsradio's Julie Mann reports, state Rep. Rosemary Mulligan (R-Des Plaines), who has served in the state House since 1993, admits she got a late start collecting the necessary election petition signatures to put herself on the GOP primary ballot in March.

She says the death of a close friend delayed her efforts, the Daily Herald reports.

But she is now vowing to mount a write-in campaign, the newspaper reported.

To do so, she will have to file an intent to run as a write-in candidate, and will need at least 500 votes to win if she is unopposed, the Dialy Herald reported.

The Daily Herald says the longtime lawmaker was the only Republican to file in the 55th House district, which covers portions of Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village and Park Ridge.

If successful, Mulligan will face Democrat Marty Moylan, who is currently the mayor of Des Plaines.
