Impressive Views Of Chicago's Winter Weather
CHICAGO (CBS) -- By meteorological standards, the winter of 2014 has been nothing short of impressive.
Others may have a different word to describe the weather.
However, the January has been one of the snowiest months on record. IF the forecast holds for snow on Thursday and Friday, it will rank No. 3 all time.
Chicago has already easily surpassed the average amount of snowfall for the entire season as well.
Chicago set a record low temperature for the date on Jan. 6 and came close to setting another on Tuesday--missing by two degrees. Eight days have seen temperatures below zero.
Equally impressive are some of the images provided from space by the National Weather Service.
This time-lapsed image, captured on Tuesday, shows the ice along the Lake Michigan being pushed away from the shoreline by strong westerly winds.
The loop was captured between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Obviously, Lake Michigan is filled with ice, and the land surrounding it has plenty of snow.
Still the view from space, also taken Tuesday is pretty stunning. It also shows clouds forming near Michigan as the winds push the ice and pass over the relatively warmer water over the lake.

By the way, "meteorological spring" begins in just over a month on March 1.
