Board spokeswoman Mary Fergus says going for the National Board certification milestone is remaining popular.
"Like doctors and accountants, it's a process whereby they can hone their skills under the most rigorous standards," Fergus said. "They get expert evaluation, self-assessment, peer review. They go through a very arduous process to become the best in their field."
Fergus says may districts give their teachers incentives, sometimes paying for that extra training.
