IDOT: Traffic Crash Deaths Outpacing 2012 So Far This year
Traffic Deaths On Rise So Far This Year
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Illinois Department of Transportation said Friday there have been more traffic deaths in Illinois so far this year than at the same point last year.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports IDOT message boards list the total number of confirmed traffic deaths as 234 through Friday, but according to IDOT Traffic Safety director John Webber, that does not include a deadly crash near in the north suburbs Friday morning.
Webber said there have been 33 more traffic deaths in Illinois this year so far compared to last year, but with only 14 more total accidents -- suggesting more multiple death accidents.
He said multiple fatality crashes usually involve someone speeding, and that speeding usually involves someone having alcohol in his or her system.
Webber suggested drivers slow down and keep a safe distance from the next motorist.
Last year, 957 people died in crashes on Illinois roads.
