Icy Roadway Makes For Treacherous Commute On I-80/94
GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- Ice on the roadway made for a treacherous commute Monday morning on the Borman Expressway in Northwest Indiana.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, salt had been spread on the expressway (I-80/94) by the time the morning rush began. But with the pavement particularly cold on the incline at Cline Avenue with cold air blowing underneath, the resulting sheet of ice made driving dangerous.
In the eastbound lanes at Cline Avenue, a sport-utility vehicle wiped out, hit the center barrier wall, spun around multiple times and came to rest perpendicular with the lanes of traffic. The accident blocked a couple of lanes and resulted in minor delays.
But directly across the center median, the westbound side of the expressway was a parking lot as of around 6:30 a.m. A semi-trailer truck got stuck and was obstructing traffic.
The truck was one of many that was left immobilized as its wheels slid on the ice-coated pavement. The tractor didn't have enough traction to negotiate the ice.
Habermehl advised avoiding I-80/94 until the sun was fully up.
