Icy Roads Blamed For Rash Of Accidents, Spinouts
UDPATED 03/24/11 7:43 a.m.
MUNDELEIN, Ill. (CBS) -- Wintry conditions have returned in Chicago, and an icy glaze on many area roadways has caused several traffic accidents and spinouts.
CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says temperatures have dropped to freezing or below across the Chicago area, and frozen precipitation has been falling. Thus, there are numerous slick spots on the roadways, particularly in the north and northwest suburbs.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, one of the worst sports is Route 83 near Mundelein, which has been shut down by Lake County sheriff's police.
From Chopper 2, a survey of the roadway near Route 45 showed one crash, a couple of cars that had crashed through the guardrail, a pickup truck that had turned sideways, and some evidence vehicles that had spun out from the northbound lanes to the southbound lanes.
Another pickup truck crashed into a couple of cars and landed upside-down against a tree.
The southbound side of the roadway was shut down at Route 45. Those heading to Route 53 from Mundelein or Vernon Hills were advised to take Diamond Lake Road to Gilmer Road, and Gilmer Road southbound to Route 83. Milwaukee Avenue was also suggested as an alternative.
Problems are also reported in several other places. A spinout was reported Route 53 near Thorndale Avenue, and Thorndale Avenue itself east of Arlington Heights Road in Wood Dale was blocked by crashes in both directions. Interstate 355 was also icy.
At least six accidents were also reported in Libertyville.
The good news, Habermehl reports, is that no serious injuries have been reported.
As to the weather, you might as well get used to it. Highs are expected in the 30s all the way up until Wednesday of next week.
