Demonstrators Gather In Zion, Scene Of Police-Involved Shooting
ZION, Ill. (CBS) --About 200 people gathered Saturday in front of the Zion Police Department after the shooting death of a teen last week by police.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports they joined forces with one goal ending police brutality.
Rally organizer Clyde McLemore says the recent shooting of 17 year-old Justus Howell allegedly by Zion police, is a pattern of injustice in the community. He says he wants the Department of Justice to investigate the shooting.
"We want a new investigation, with an out of town DOJ, somebody that does not have police ties, to the police here," Mclemore said.
Those part of the peaceful protest also bring attention to the recent shooting death of unarmed Walter Scott, by a police officer in North Charleston.
"You can have apprehension without death, it just shows you have no respect for life," said Shannon Wilson.
Among the protesters, those who say their family members were killed by police.
"This is a pattern and until we stand and say enough is enough, it's going to keep repeating itself," said community activist Ralph Peterson Jr.
CBS 2 contacted Zion police. They had no comment on the rally.
