HS Coach: Derrick Rose Was A 'Winner' From Day One
CHICAGO (WSCR) Derrick Rose has taken the NBA by storm this season and is the clear frontrunner to win the league's Most Valuable Player award. But if you ask him, he'll tell you that he'd trade all the individual accolades for team success.
And he really means it too.
"He's been like that since Day 1," Rose's High School basketball coach Robert Smith said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "[He] never wants to step on anyone's toes, just goes about his business, you know, the day-to-day, puts his hard hat on and get it done."

Smith talked about how leading up to the State Championship his senior year, Rose said he wanted to show everyone that he was the best point guard in the country. Instead of shooting all game like Smith expected, Rose distributed the ball to his teammates and only scored two points in the Simeon win.
"All he wants to do is win, that's it," Smith said. "Whatever he has to do to win is what he's going to do. If you need him to score to win, he's going to do that. If you need him to pass, he's going to do that. If you need him to guard, he's going to do that. He's just a winner, and when you have those qualities that's hard to take away from you."
