How Sweep It Was!

Five years ago today, the Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros to win the franchise's first championship since 1917. It was the 19th sweep in World Series history and one that sent the entire city of Chicago into a frenzy.

The Sox postseason record was an astounding 11-1, which tied them with the 1999 Yankees for the second best playoff record in baseball history. Only the 1976 Reds (7-0) had a better record.

The '05 White Sox team was full of over-achievers who weren't the favorite when the season started. "A lot of people doubted us in Spring Training," Mark Buehrle said after the clinching game. "Kenny [Williams] and Ozzie [Guillen] obviously knew what they were doing, and it paid off."

The 11-1 postseason record is impressive, but when you consider that they team ended the regular season winning 16 of the final 17 games and didn't lose a road game during the playoffs, it becomes clear that that was a White Sox team that simply dominated the rest of the league from the end of September on.

While many of the players may have changed over the previous five years, the memories are sure to remain as crisp as they were back on that glorious Wednesday night in 2005.
