How Can The Cubs Compete In 2012?
(WSCR) The Chicago Cubs are the not-so-proud owners of the second-worst record in baseball, a miserable 35-52. With this season all but over for the Cubs, the organization has to start thinking about how they can compete in 2012.
"The only way that you're going to have a chance to compete next year is take the pitchers that you think can help you next year, keep those, get rid of the rest of them," Gordon Wittenmyer, of the Chicago Sun-Times, said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "And then go out in the free agent market and pick yourself up a starter, or two. They don't have to be world beaters, but they have to give you consistent innings ... with a better than .500 record."

Wittenmyer feels that the addition of some quality starters, and solid contributions from pitchers in the system, will lead to an improved pitching staff, which could carry the team in 2012.
"As long as you can pitch, and if you can catch the ball, it doesn't matter how well they hit," Wittenmyer said. "They should be able to compete."
