Hot Start For Beginning Of School Year In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- As classes begin for the Chicago Public Schools, the city will be seeing some of the hottest conditions of the year.
Although Chicago likely won't match its highest temperature of the year – a 96-degree mark reached on July 16 – both Monday and Tuesday could see temperatures reaching 93 or 94 degrees.
Combined with humid conditions, the heat index could reach more than 100 degrees both days, according to the National Weather Service.
Chicago has had only seven days in the 90s so far this year, including a four-day stretch in mid-July.
Luckily for CPS students, the district said most schools have full or partial air conditioning. The district also has hundreds of fans available for classrooms.
Principals are also advised to keep students and staff cool by closing shades, and moving classes to cooler rooms in their buildings.
There will be a brief respite from the very hot conditions starting Tuesday night, when a cold front will bring temperatures down to the middle to high 80s on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Then temperatures will hit the 90s again on Saturday and Sunday for the Labor Day weekend.
