In court documents, Northwestern says 86-year-old Dolores Bedin, who has inoperable pancreatic cancer, has been medically ready for discharge since September.
But, the Chicago Tribune reports, her daughter has refused to take the woman home.
Janet Bedin tells the newspaper the hospital is trying to force her mother to leave when she's not strong enough. So now, Northwestern is asking a judge to revoke the daughter's power of attorney and appoint a public guardian.
A hospital spokeswoman tells the Tribune a discharge is in the elderly patient's best interests. Medicare is no longer paying the elderly woman's bills because her hospitalization is not deemed medically necessary.
