Homeless Man Killed When Turned Away For Shelter
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (STMW) - A pedestrian who was hit by two vehicles in west suburban Downers Grove Wednesday night has died.
About 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, 29-year-old Antonio Cirilo III was apparently trying to cross Butterfield Road just east of Illinois 53 when he was hit by several vehicles, according to the DuPage County Coroner's office.
The homeless victim had just left a church in the area that offered shelter, but was turned away, Downers Grove Deputy Chief Kurt Bluder.
He apparently "darted out'' into traffic and was hit first by a Pontiac Torrent sport-utility vehicle that was traveling east on Butterfield Road. A Nissan Sentra that was also eastbound then rolled over him and both vehicles stopped, according to Bluder.
Downers Grove Fire personnel initiated aggressive life-saving efforts and transported Cirilo to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m., according to the coroner's office.
The wreck occurred after sundown in an area that is not well it and Cirilo was wearing dark clothing, according to Bluder.
The road was dry and the posted speed limit is 45, but it was not immediately known how fast the vehicles were going, or whether they saw the pedestrian and tried to brake or did not have time.
There were no citations issued and foul play is not suspected in the accident, according to Bluder.
