Hoge: Dunn Can't Swing, Wants To Return Friday
By Adam Hoge -
Adam Dunn is in uniform and will be announced with his team before Thursday's home opener, but he won't play two days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy in Kansas City.
"I'm really disappointed I'm not playing in this game today," Dunn said. "It's just another game to a lot of people, but home openers are really special, especially when it's your first one (in a new city). I really wanted to be out there, but it's not going to work."
Dunn wouldn't rule out pinch hitting today, but added that he can't swing a bat. That was one of two contradictions coming from the new White Sox designated hitter Thursday. The other had to do with the timetable for a return.
"The timetable is tomorrow now," Dunn said. "I just had to push it back a day. Hopefully tomorrow it will be better. That's what I'm shooting for."
But later, Dunn said he hadn't "talked about a timetable with anyone."
It seems as if Dunn and the team have different ideas about how long he will be out. Given Ozzie Guillen's track record with injuries, he'll likely wait until Dunn can swing a bat fully and then wait one more day before putting him in the lineup.
"I feel like if I'm able to go out there and perform and not hurt the team, I want to do it," Dunn said.
