Hockey Isn't What It Used To Be

Former Blackhawk Stu Grimson joined the Danny Mac Show on 670 The Score to talk hockey.

Grimson shared his story of how his team in the 90's were striving to win the Stanley Cup but they lost to the Penguins in the finals in 1992.

He said how he was thrilled when the Blackhawks won the cup last season. "It was beyond words for me. We never achieved what we wanted to achieve... I almost felt like it was finished business."

He continued to talk about the '92 series against the Penguins during the Stanley Cup Finals. "Believe it or not in the Stanley Cup Finals facing the Pittsburgh Penguins, [Mike] Keenan goes 'hey uh, next five guys wanna play, go ahead.'" The Blackhawks were up 3-0 at this point before losing when coach Mike Keenan benched some of their best players.

When asked if Grimson could play professional hockey against today's talent, he said he thinks he could make a team but would be more specialized than he was before. "Back when I broke in compared to the game as it's being played today, it's a lot faster. These guys are perhaps a little bit smaller, but they're quicker, they're stronger and I am amazed at what I see some of these young guys doing with the puck."

Grimson also described how hockey has changed so much since his career and due to the salary caps that you can't just have a "tough guy" on the roster. He would have to be able to serve another role as well.
