Historic Former CPS Headquarters Getting A Nice Scrubbing
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Stripping away years of urban grit, the historic building that was formerly the Chicago Public Schools headquarters is getting a much-needed bath.
It is part of a restoration of the 1907 Daniel Burnham designed structure at 125 S. Clark St.
CPS sold the building one year ago for $28 million to a developer, Blue Star Properties.
Plans for the building include lofted office space, an outdoor terrace, a ground-floor marketplace and lounge, and a fitness area.
Designed in 1907, 125 S. Clark was originally the Commercial National Bank of Chicago. It later became the headquarters for Commonwealth Edison, before CPS moved there in the 1990s.
According to a 1998 story in the Chicago Tribune, CPS paid $8.2 million for the property.
CPS moved to a smaller location at 42 W. Madison in the Loop in November of 2014.
At the time of the sale, CPS said the district would save more than $60 million over the next 15 years as a result of the relocation.
