Highland Park Mayor Michael Belsky says citizens surveyed wanted the ban, although he'd like to see it statewide rather than just in Highland Park.
"It's easier to implement on a statewide level than community by community, but we felt we should exhibit some leadership in this regard," Belsky said.
Belsky says Highland Park police will start enforcing the hand-held cell phone ban June 1 with a $50 ticket for the first offense.
