Heyman: Addison Reed Should Be White Sox Closer
(WSCR) Throughout spring training there was no greater mystery surrounding the White Sox than who would be the closer.
Addison Reed? Hector Santiago? Matt Thornton? No one knew for sure who new manager Robin Ventura would select. Finally, word broke that Santiago would act as the team's closer.
Through his first 7 1/3 innings as closer, Santiago gave up 12 hits and six earned runs. This, combined with soreness from starter Chris Sale, forced Sale to the bullpen as the team's closer. Still, one MLB expert thinks Reed should have been the closer all along.
"It's definitely a weird situation," Jon Heyman of CBS Sports told The Mully and Hanley Show. "We went through spring training not knowing who the closer is, so you could say they didn't really have a closer. But now, I almost think you have too many closers. In my mind, and I've though this all along, Addison Reed should be the closer of that team. ... Just talking to the guys involved, I thought he was the guy in terms of personality. To me, he's a closer. He was (Stephen) Strasburg's closer in college. I know that's not proof, closing in college, but just looking at his personality, I feel he should be their closer.

"Now you have Sale who was moved to the bullpen and he's so good he's gotta be a closer. He's not just a middle reliever in this part of his career. They almost have too many closers. I give them credit for taking (Sale's) health into account. ... But now it's put them in a funny situation where they're a starter short."
