Heat Wave Has Everyone Struggling To Keep Cool -- Even The Birds
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A gull, apparently overheated from the sweltering conditions, found some relief in the South Loop on Thursday, thanks to the generosity of a woman and her kids.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports Karen Baggot and her kids were on the way to the park with their mom when they spotted the large bird on the sidewalk at 17th and State streets, just outside the Central District police station.
The bird was panting on the hot sidewalk, so Baggot and the kids decided to help. They initially thought the bird was a duck, but noticed it didn't have a flat bill.
"It was sitting back there and it walked over here until we found a little cup to fill it with water, and then it's been staying with us ever since," the mother said.

The gull dipped its beak in the cup to get some water while it laid down in the shade.
"It won't eat, sorry, but I think it's trying to crawl," one of Baggot's kids said.
The cops inside the police station weren't much better off, working without air conditioning inside.
Members of a bird rescue group later showed up to take the gull away and get it some help.
