Heat index values near 100 degrees Tuesday with evening storms in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — This week, the forecast calls for hot, humid weather to persist, with periodic strong to severe thunderstorms.

Following heat indices in the mid to upper 90s in many areas Tuesday, we expect a complex of thunderstorms to race our way from Iowa overnight. 

Between midnight and 6 a.m., many will see heavy rain, frequent lightning, and the potential of downed tree limbs from gusty thunderstorm winds.

It appears we will get another break on Wednesday with hot, humid, and mainly dry weather before additional rounds of storms return at times on Thursday and Friday.

Lollapalooza concert-goers should stay tuned to forecast updates this week as we pin down storm timing. Drier weather returns this weekend with high temperatures near 90 away from the lake. 

Tonight: Thunderstorms are likely, some of which may bring wind damage. Low: 73

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy with an isolated late-day storm. High: 90

Thursday: Scattered thunderstorms at times. Warm and muggy. High: 89  

The city is offering cooling centers during the extreme heat. The cooling center locations below will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday:
