Hearings Planned On Public School Closings, Consolidations

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Public hearings begin this week on plans by the Chicago Public Schools to close and consolidate a number of schools.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's John Hultman reports, the planned two-hour sessions will allow those who want to speak two minutes each. They can also submit written testimony.

The public hearings will take place on the fifth floor of the Chicago School Board offices at 125 S. Clark St. Each affected school will get its own individual hearing.

Meetings with affected communities also continue at Hans Christian Andersen Academy, 1148 N. Honore St; Guglielmo Marconi Elementary Academy, 233 N. Kolmar Ave.; Philo Carpenter Elementary School, 1250 W. Erie St.; and Avondale Elementary Schools, 2945 N. Sawyer Ave., among others. All the aforementioned institutions are set to be consolidated with nearby schools.

CPS announced plans late last month to close eight schools and consolidate them into six others. If the CPS plan is approved by the Board of Education next month, hundreds of students would be moved to new schools next year.

The move would mean eight schools would lose their identities and principals and as many as 100 teachers would be displaced.
