Harvey Man Gets 102 Years For Fatal Shooting After Party In 2011
MARKHAM (STMW) -- A south suburban man has been sentenced to more than 100 years in prison for fatally shooting one man and wounding two others during an altercation outside a party in 2011.
Martell McGrew, 25, of Harvey, was previously convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder for the October 2011 shooting of 19-year-old Jacoby Gilliand in south suburban Markham, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Gilliand and two friends were leaving a party in the 16600 block of Turner only to find McGrew sitting on their car, prosecutors said.
A fight ensued and one of the victims "punched McGrew in the face and he fell in some nearby bushes," prosecutors said.
He then pulled a handgun and started firing, striking all three men. Gilliand later died from his injuries, while the other two men recovered.
After the shooting, McGrew ran away but was later arrested, prosecutors said.
Cook County Judge Luciano Panici sentenced McGrew to 102 years, 50 for the murder and 26 each for the attempted murders, according to prosecutors. He is currently at the Stateville Correctional Center, awaiting placement.
