Handcuffed Suspect Escapes From Police In Crystal Lake
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A handcuffed burglary suspect who escaped from police custody has been captured, police said Thursday morning.
"The Crystal Lake Police Department has apprehended James R Henson without incident and he has been turned over to the custody of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department." the Crystal Lake Police Department said in a statement.
Henson, who was handcuffed, escaped Wednesday evening around 8 p.m., police said.
About 9 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff's department sent an automated phone message to Crystal Lake residents warning them a suspect had escaped in the northern part of the town.
The incident unfolded at 5:54 p.m. Wednesday when McHenry County Sheriff's deputies responded to a trespassing complaint in the 4000 block of Terra Cotta Road in Crystal Lake. The property owner contacted police with a complaint that a person was illegally occupying a barn, according to a sheriff's office release.
They found Henson inside the barn without legal justification and he was arrested for criminal trespass to real property, burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal damage to property, according to the release.
But at 7:39 p.m., Henson escaped from a sheriff's squad car by kicking out the rear passenger window in the area of Hillside Road and Walkup Road in Crystal Lake, the release said.
A search was performed in the immediate area, but Henson was not located until 8:30 a.m. Thursday when he was taken into custody near the McHenry County Conservation District Prairie Trail bike path, a release from Crystal Lake police said.
