Hammond, Ind. Officer Shot During Bank Robbery
HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) -- It was like something from the Wild West: An armed bank robber fired eight times at an officer, hitting him in the leg three times on Friday morning.
Police say they caught two suspects about five miles from the bank at 8th and Hovey in Gary, Ind. One of the robbers got out of the getaway car and laid on the ground. The other ran and was soon captured, CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.
Police say someone on the phone with a bank teller called police when the teller suddenly dropped the phone just before 11 a.m. Shortly after police arrived, the gunman opened fire.
Authorities recovered the gun and the stolen money. The injured officer, 34, has only been on the force 13 months.
