Hacker Gets Email Addresses Of Plainfield School Job Applicants
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- Plainfield School District 202 says a third-party website it uses to process job applications was hacked by someone who sent an obscene email to thousands of current and former job-seekers.
Recipients began complaining about the email to school officials and Plainfield police on Saturday. It included racially charged and other offensive language.
District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez says the person who hacked into the third-party website obtained at least 23,000 email addresses of applicants going back at least two years.
The third-party vendor fixed the breach Saturday, but was still trying to figure out what other personal information was compromised, Hernandez said. He stressed that Social Security numbers are not requested during the online application process.
"We will prosecute to the fullest extent possible," Hernandez says.
District 202 notified Plainfield Police and the FBI. Hernandez sent an automated message to District 202 families on Saturday explaining the incident.
