Gunman Shot And Killed By Police In Marquette Park
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Police shot and killed man in the Southwest Side Marquette Park neighborhood just after midnight on New Year's Day.
The shooting happened in the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue about 12:10 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said, citing preliminary information. One person was hit. No officers were injured.
A male gunshot wound patient was taken from 7202 S. Campbell Ave. about 12:12 a.m. in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Sean Flynn said.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said police officers heard gun shots in the vicinity of 72nd Street and Campbell Avenue and pulled into an alley to investigate. They saw a man firing a gun, announced they were police, and he turned and ran through the gangway.
He ran down some basement stairs, when he turned toward police with the gun in his hand, Camden said. Police then shot him.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he died, Camden said.
Camden said the man was in his 50s and two guns were recovered at the scene.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has not been notified of the death as of about 3 a.m.
Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Scott Ando said IPRA was investigating, but did not have any additional information.
