Gun-Wielding Suspect Killed By Maywood Cop
MAYWOOD, Ill. (STMW) -- Police in west suburban Maywood shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at an officer during a Thursday afternoon foot chase.
The 20-year-old Maywood man was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center a short time after an officer shot him once in the chest inside an apartment building about 4:30 p.m., authorities said.
Police were called to an apartment building in the 1800 block of South 19th Avenue for unspecified reasons, said Maywood village spokesman Larry Shapiro.
An officer arriving at the scene saw the man outside the building and attempted to question him, but the man fled, running toward the back of the building, Shapiro said. The officer chased after the man and followed him as he entered the apartment building from a back entrance.
Inside the building, the officer noticed the man had a gun and ordered him to drop it. The man then raised the gun toward the officer, who shot him once in the chest, Shapiro said.
The man was taken to Loyola, where he was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m., Shapiro said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
A gun was recovered at the scene, Shapiro said.
A police "integrity unit" is conducting an investigation, Shapiro said.
