GrubHub To Move Headquarters Into Loop
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago-based GrubHub is moving its headquarters from the city's Near Northwest Side to the heart of the Loop.
GrubHub announced Friday that it will lease 59,463 square feet in the Burnham Center, at 111 W. Washington St. across the street from the City Hall-County Building.
"This move is one of many significant milestones we've hit during the past year," GrubHub founder and chief executive officer Matt Maloney said in a news release. "Joining the growing group of technology companies in the Loop area is not only significant for GrubHub, but for the city of Chicago."
The company had been headquartered at 2211 N. Elston Ave., along a corridor dominated by low-rise office buildings, light industry and big-box retail.
Maloney and co-founder Mike Evans started GrubHub in 2004, after pondering that an online option should be available to help people order food when, Maloney said, he and Evans had grown "tired of ordering pizza from the same place."
The concept is simple: you want food delivered to your home, they tell you which restaurants will deliver to your address, and you order your food online.
Grubhub has grown 100 percent every year since 2004, when it all fit in one office.
Both Maloney and Evans had a job and a background in information technology when they started Grubhub. They said they are proud to be a part of the growing Chicago startup scene.
The Burnham Center where they are moving is a 21-story tower dating from 1913, and renovated in 1986. It is named for its legendary designer, Daniel Burnham.
