Group Gives Books To Englewood Families
(CBS) – A Chicago group went old school Thursday to try to protect kids from violence on the streets.
Members packed up a truckload of books and passed them out to give kids something safe and positive to occupy their time.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.
Father Kevin Lee and his son, three-year-old Rashawn, are sharing more than just words on a page. They're sharing an experience one group hopes can lead to a bright future.
They're one of dozens of Englewood families visited tonight by the Acts of Love campaign.
Chicago volunteers who brought boxes and boxes of books and put their feet to the pavement to give to each child they met.
It was the brainchild of the group's founder, William Hall.
"A lot of people don't want to come to Englewood. They judge Englewood. They look down on the young people in Englewood. So we believe if we bring love and something that can change their lives, their outlook will be different and community will be different," he says.
The books were brand new, and slightly used, old favorites and new -- all donated.
All to show children and their families someone cares, more than they may have known.
"We want to say to young people that don't have much that here's something that you can possibly have that can change the rest of your life," Hall says.
