Among those breaking ground was Chicago Bears Cornerback Charles Tillman.
Tillman says he's a big supporter ever since his daughter Tiana, now a toddler, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, an enlargement of the heart, when she was an infant.
"It was right around Labor Day, or Memorial Day, weekend. All the hotels were booked. And I didn't know about Ronald McDonald House until someone told me about it, " Tillman tells Newsradio 780.
Tillman also says he and his wife turned to the Ronald McDonald House for help and a place to stay while doctors worked to help his daughter, "We went over there and they had a room and they took great care of my family, not just because I'm a football player but because that's just what they do."
The world's largest Ronald McDonald House at 211 East Grand is set to open in 2012.
