Grayslake Kids Donate 300 Pounds Of Extra Halloween Candy To Troops
GRAYSLAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- When two suburban teachers put out a call to their students for leftover trick-or-treat candy, they never expected what they got.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports health instructor Steve Feldman and another teacher asked kids at Woodview School in Grayslake to bring in their extra Halloween candy, to send to men and women serving in the military overseas.
"I said, you know, just keep 5 to 10 pieces for you, and then bring me the rest," Feldman said.
He expected to get 10 to 15 pounds, but instead the kids turned in more than 300 pounds of candy.
"It's awesome. You know, it just shows how good our community is," Feldman said.
Faced with the cost of shipping far more candy than he expected, Feldman turned to a local dentist that participates in Operation Gratitude, a candy buyback program to send candy to the troops.
"It's Gentle Care Dentistry in Mundelein, and they are actually nice enough; I'm going to bring them all the candy tomorrow," Feldman said.
He said the candy serves two purposes: showing support for the troops, and keeping kids from eating so much candy.
