Grandmother Gets Probation In Accidental Death Of 5-Month-Old Boy
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (CBS) -- Cook County prosecutors say nobody cared about a baby who was left home alone and accidentally died of suffocation.
But as WBBM Newsradio's David Roe reports, the grandmother who was responsible for the child got a very light sentence.
Eugenia Trejo, 50, entered a blind guilty plea to felony endangering the life and health of as child in connection with the death of her 5-month-old grandson, Reymond Trejo, on Jan. 4, 2011, in Rolling Meadows, the Chicago Tribune reported.
She could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison, and prosecutors had asked for a lengthy sentence. But Trejo tearfully told the Judge Kay Hanlon that she never intended any harm to come to the child and that she loved him very much, the Tribune reported.
Ultimately, she was sentenced to 30 months' probation.
Reymond suffocated after he rolled off a bed into a pile of clothing, the newspaper reported.
