Governor, Polish President Visit Troops Downstate
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gov. Pat Quinn and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski flew to Marseilles on Sunday to visit National Guard troops.
CBS 2's Dave Savini reports Quinn and Komorowski boarded a Chinook helicopter at Midway International Airport early Sunday, to fly to Marseilles for a 9:30 a.m. event to honor continued military cooperation between Poland and the Illinois National Guard.
Komorowski is a lifelong political activist, who became acting president of Poland in 2010 after the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski. Komorowski was later elected president in July 2010.
Chicago has strong ties to Poland, as it has the largest urban population of Poles outside of Poland.
NATO is also extremely important to Poland, because of their dependence on Russia.
