Gov. Quinn 'Still Listening To Both Sides' On Death Penalty

SPRINGFIELD, Ill (WBBM) -- Earlier this month the General Assembly voted to abolish the death penalty. However, at this point Gov. Quinn has yet to sign the legislation.

The General Assembly voted to end capital punishment as part of sentencing in Illinois. Quinn has 60 days to sign the bill; if he does not, it automatically becomes law. But at this point says he's still listening to both sides.

Former Governor George Ryan ordered a moratorium on the death penalty 10 years ago after a number of death penalty cases were overturned. Republican state senator Kirk Dillard says if the governor signs the legislation he would then introduce a partial capital punishment bill aimed at those considered mass murders and convicted using DNA and videotaping.
