CHICAGO (AP) - Republican Adam Kinzinger has defeated first-term Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson in Illinois' 11th congressional district.

With 76 percent of precincts reporting, Kinzinger had about 57 percent votes and Halvorson had about 43 percent of the vote.

Kinzinger is an Air Force pilot who has received heavy backing from tea party activists and an endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The 11th district stretches south of Chicago to Bloomington and has been largely Republican.

Halvorson is a former state senator. She won her first term in 2008 after Rep. Jerry Weller retired among ethics questions.
