Gold Coast Residents Fed Up With Crime
CHICAGO (CBS) – Some members of the Gold Coast community are saying enough is a enough, after a string of violent incidents in their neighborhood.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.
"We as residents of the Gold Coast are sick of this violence, sick of this crime that is not being punished, and that the city has to figure out other alternatives for these kids," Harvey Kinzelberg says.
He was among the people attending a meeting Wednesday afternoon with 42nd Ward Ald. Brendan Reilly.
A letter from the East Lake Shore Drive Association details several recent incidents in the Gold Coast, including shots fired in front of 179 E. Lake Shore Drive in early August. A bullet hole remains in the window of a first-floor condo. Sources say when police arrived they found a bullet in the home owner's bedroom.
On Aug. 26, in broad daylight, a police report says 20 juveniles were arrested for mob action at Chicago and State after they allegedly beat people at random.
Kinzelberg says the youths told authorities "it's fun."
"It's crazy," he says.
In June, a doctor was attacked after walking home from work at Northwestern Memorial.
Over the Fourth of July weekend, college student Brandon Trebbien was beaten up at random while walking with friends at Chicago and Dearborn.
Kinzelberg says the violence has to stop.
"It continues to go through my mind: 'Do I want to continue to live in downtown Chicago?'" he says.
