Customers flood in person to shop in Glencoe, Illinois, Cyber Monday notwithstanding
GLENCOE, Ill. (CBS) -- This Cyber Monday has shaped up to be a record-breaker—but it did not cut into sales at one small business in north suburban Glencoe.
While many scoured the internet to look for the best deals Monday, some prefer to shop in person and locally. So rather than sitting at their computer or gluing their eyes to their smartphones, they stopped at BlackSheep General Store, at 346 Park Ave. in Glencoe.
"So far this morning, it's kind of been nonstop since we got in," said BlackSheep co-owner Natalie Slotnick.
BlackSheep sells gifts, jewelry, and a wide variety of items only in-store. The store has a website, but you can't shop on it.
Slotnick said she and her staff are not fazed by Cyber Monday because of the support from the community.
"Fortunately, we live in a community where they're excited that we kept the store open and kept it going," she said.
Slotnick said BlackSheep General Store has been in Glencoe for 10 years, but she and her partner took over in April of this year. She said since then, the store has seen an upward trajectory in sales."
"We've kind of done about 10 percent better than she did last year," Slotnick said.
CBS News reported that this Cyber Monday should break a record—with 72 million people expected to shop online for deals.
Adobe Analytics, which tracks online shopping, is projecting sales to reach over $13 billion this Cyber Monday—more than 6 percent than last year.
According to the Small Business Administration, the reported projected spending in the United States from those who shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday was around $17 billion last year.
Slotnick said thanks to the community, BlackSheep has been doing well nonetheless.
"Small Business Saturday was great. Black Friday was great," Slotnick said. "Like I said, as you could tell, we've had a really busy couple of hours today so far."
