Girl, 6, Returns Home Three Days After She Was Shot In The Head
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 6-year-old girl who was shot in the head while playing with friends on Thursday in the Park Manor neighborhood was released from the hospital on Sunday.
Zariah Muhammad was in good spirits and ready to get back to just being a kid after she returned to her home in Chatham, surrounded by family.
With a big smile on her face, she was welcomed by a few special guests; her favorite cartoon characters -- Bart Simpson, Spider-Man, and one of the Minions.
It was very much a celebration at her home, after all she has been through in just a few days.
On Thursday, she was playing with water balloons with some friends outside a home near 68th and Calumet when a man walked up to her 22-year-old uncle to ask a question and began shooting.
Her uncle, David McCray, was shot in the chest, and later died. Zariah was hit in the head, and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove bullet fragments from her skull.
Zariah's mother said her daughter has been incredibly brave throughout the ordeal, and gave her the strength to persevere.
"She's here for a reason. She's here to keep me strong as I'm trying to be, and keep her family strong, because she definitely did that," Gloria Strong said.
Zariah said she's excited to go back to school, and plans on going to Chuck E Cheese with her friends on Monday.
