Girl, 17, Charged After Shooting Boyfriend

CHICAGO (STMW) - A 17-year-old is in jail after allegedly shooting her boyfriend in the head with a .357 magnum -- critically wounding him Tuesday afternoon at his Woodlawn neighborhood home, police said.

Shakonna Thomas, 17, of the 6600 block of S. Wabash Ave., was booked into Cook County Jail Thursday after being ordered held on $250,000 bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff's website. Police said Thomas was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm Wednesday night.

It was not known what prompted the shooting, which happened about 1:30 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Rhodes Avenue at the home of the 20-year-old man she allegedly shot, police said.

When officers got there a 19-year-old male relative of the victim was performing CPR on him after calling 911, according to Grand Crossing District police Capt. Alberta Raymond. The victim was shot in the back of the head, she said.

The victim was initially taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado said.

The relative heard the victim and his girlfriend, identified by police as Thomas, arguing in the bedroom prior to the shooting. The relative heard a gunshot and then saw the woman running out of the room allegedly saying, "I shot him,'' according to Raymond.

Thomas left the scene, but officers were able to negotiate with a member of her family and she surrendered at 75th and King Drive and was taken to Calumet Area detective headquarters for questioning.

The two had not been dating for very long and it was not known what the fight was about, according to Raymond who said a .357 magnum revolver was recovered from the scene.

Thomas is expected to appear in Domestic Violence Court (Br. 64) on Dec. 28, according to the website.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
