Girl, 16, Stabbed At High School In Grand Crossing

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 16-year-old girl was hospitalized Tuesday after being stabbed at Hirsch Metro High School in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports, around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, two female students got into a fight inside the school, and one stabbed the other with a pair of scissors.
"I heard about second period … they were fighting, two girls fighting; and then, one of them stabbed her in the neck with scissors," Hirsch senior Najah Henderson said.
Senior Kevin Money said he knew something was wrong when he heard school officials on the public address system, calling for help.
"I just heard the intercom, somebody said they was fighting, and security was running to the girls, and that's it," Money said.
The victim was taken from the school, at 7740 S. Ingleside Ave., to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The girl was initially reported in critical condition, but her condition had stabilized by late Tuesday morning.
The girl who stabbed the victim was taken into custody. No charges had been filed as of 5 p.m.
Senior Brandon Shelvin said he saw the accused stabber being led away by security guards.
"The one girl who did the stabbing, she had scratches on her arm, scratches on her face," Shelvin said.
Those who didn't see the fight quickly learned of it as word spread through the halls.
"After everybody heard, it was, like, 'Oh my God, somebody got stabbed, somebody got stabbed,'" Shelvin said.
He said the school remained relatively calm in the aftermath of the fight.
But former student Dominique Crumbley said she remembers little calm when she last attended Hirsch in 2010.
"It was bad then, and it was probably, it's even worse now. The kids nowadays, it's just no home training. It's just ridiculous over here," she said.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Chicago Public Schools officials said, "We are working closely with both CPD in their investigation of this incident and the principal to keep parents informed of the situation and ensure them that all appropriate steps have been taken to provide a safe environment for students remaining at the school."
