Girardi Leaves Door Open for Cubs' Managerial Position
He was born in Peoria and grew up a Cubs fan. He attended Northwestern University and later made his Major League debut with the Cubs. Joe Girardi has as much connection to the organization as any other candidate, including Ryne Sandberg. Within a week of manager Lou Piniella announcing his retirement after this season Girardi has faced the question he will continue to face until he extends his contract with the Yankees or the Cubs officially hire Piniella's successor. When asked about the possibility of taking over on the Northside, Girardi did little put to that talk to rest. In a New York Daily News story published on Thursday Girardi was asked about the possibility of rejoining the Cubs he responded with a very noncommittal statement. "I figured this would come up once Lou announced his retirement," Girardi told the Daily News. "I have a responsibility to this club and the guys in that room, and that's my concern. People can speculate all they want, but that's not my concern right now. I don't really think much about it."
The Yankees have an organizational policy not to negotiate contracts during the season. And the chances that the Yankees would waive that policy for Girardi are slim to none; seeing as both team captain Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera both have expiring contracts just like Girardi. So as the baseball season continues to roll on, the speculation of Piniella's replacement will roll on as well, more than likely with Girardi's name right in the mix.
