Giraffe Sculptures Up For Sale, If They're Returned To Lakeview
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The metal giraffes that graced a Lakeview street for almost 35 years have been put up for sale, if the new owner puts them back where they used to be.
WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports the giant giraffe sculptures were unceremoniously removed from Elaine Place last November.
The property where they stood had a new owner, Apartment Finders, and the new building owners didn't want to pay to insure the giraffes; so the property seller, Milton Zale, took them away to be restored.
Zale said that restoration will be finished "very soon," and he has offered to sell the two giraffes to Apartment Finders for $90,000 - if they guarantee the giraffes will be put back on the same spot.
Zale said he's also willing to sell the giraffes to a neighborhood group, if they'd make the same guarantee.
There was a big outcry last fall when the giraffes were removed from Elaine Place.
Zale said he hasn't heard back from Apartment Finders about the offer.
