George Steinbrenner Dies
The New York Yankees owner suffered a massive heart attack this morning at his Tamp home and was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:30 AM. The Steinbrenner family said that services will be private, but confirmed that there would be a public service to be announced at a later date. Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees in 1973 for $8.8 million from CBS and today the franchise is estimates to be worth nearly a billion dollars. Under Steinbrenner's ownership te Yankees won 11 AL pennants and seven world series trophies. The 80 year old who had just celebrated his birthday on July 4th, had had health problems for the past couple of years and no longer dealt witht he day-to-day operations of the Yankees; those responsibilites had been tunred over to his sons in 2007.
