Gas Stations Owe State Of Illinois Millions Of Dollars
CHICAGO (WBBM) - Illinois is apparently due million of dollars from some of the State's 24-hundred gas station operators.
More than one-fourth of Illinois gas station operators have reportedly pocketed millions in sales tax dollars by under-reporting the amount of fuel they sell to the public.
The Chicago Tribune says indictments over the past year and a half accuse at least 14 gas station operators of illegally withholding a portion of the sales taxes their customers paid.

However, the Illinois Department of Revenue told the Tribune that is just a fraction of the 651 operators who have cheated the state.
The paper says some $54 million in back sales taxes, interest and penalties have been recouped largely through settlements or after violators came forward under the threat of greater penalties.
